"Red Room Saloon" 10/07/06 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Classy & Cool"

We first met Rick, the owner of the Red Room, when he was a "flair" bartender (i.e. those fancy, bottle-flingin' servers ala' the movie Cocktail) at TI's Kahunaville. He once told us he had a dream to open his own bar and now he has: The Red Room Saloon.

The Red Room is a very classy, even sexy, bar a few blocks west of the Palace Station on Sahara, not too far from the Strip. We were served by "Flarin' Erin", also formerly from Kahunaville, who showed us several spontaenous bottle and cup tosses and catches and also whipped up a mean dirty martini.

There was a DJ in the corner playing deep hip hop at just the right volume and the crowd seemed to be cool and "with it", mostly in their 20's and 30's. With their trendy ad style and weekly promotions, The Red Room will certainly be a very different kind of neighborhood bar, a bar with "flair"!

"House of Blues" 10/03/06 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Kick Ass Knight"

We were wandering around the Mandalay the other Saturday night, drinking and carrying on, and decided to stop by the House of Blues to see what was going on. In the lounge/restaurant portion, they had cleared out all the tables and turned the floor into a giant dance floor and people were dancing like fools.

To what were they dancing to? To the Boogie Knights, a live band that does all sorts of hits from the disco era. The Boogie Knights are Vegas legends and have been around for several years. They play perfect renditions of many of the top hits from the 70's. They even play songs that most cover bands wouldn't attempt and pull it off flawlessly.

They had the place rockin' with their brand of irreverent entertainment and often evoked doubletakes form the crowd who were making sure Donna Summer, Ashford and Simpson or Blondie weren't actually on stage rather than the all-male, ultra disco-clad B.K.'s.

Yeah, it's not the coolest thing you can be doing in Vegas but it sure is one of the most fun! For a knight of mindless fun, catch the Boogie Nights one of these Saturday nights at the H.O.B. inside the Mandalay.

"Red Rock Casino" 07/10/06 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 4 Price - 2

"It's Cool"

So, we liked Red Rock overall. We liked the clubs, the rooms, the pool, the people. But a couple of things we thought were pretty damn cool:.
1) The tequila bar at Cabo restaurant. Supposedly has about 90 types of tequila. We saw one of our faves (Gran Centenario Anejo) and had a couple of shots. $9 each for very tall shots (nearly double shots). We were groovin' on that.

2) In the rooms, where they have the cookies and cashews and other stuff you can buy they also had an "intimacy kit" which included 3 condoms, a vibrating condom ring and some "booty parlor" lube, all in a very classy box. The lube said "Use with a toy. Use with a boy. Use with your favorite boytoy." For some reason, that clinched the deal--Red Rock is cool!

"Cherry" 06/11/06 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"Intimate and Sexy"

Cherry is a small but sexy dance club inside the new Red Rock Casino, several miles Northwest of the Strip. The entrance is a mirrored cave which opens into circular, domed room, with lots of wood, mirrors in the ceiling and red accents throughout.

The dance floor is in the middle of the club and is surrounded by VIP couches and booths. They have 4 boxes about 3 feet off the ground and allow female guests to hop up and show off their dance moves. They also have a strippers pole in one of the VIP areas which got some good action by several of the ladies.

The DJ played a good variety of dance music, weaving in a bit of rock, old school, house and hip hop.

When you need a break from the music you can head out to the large patio. There's a pool with plush chaises and another bar and it's good area to socialize.

It's a classy and fun place that doesn't feel at all like a typical Stations Casino offering.

"The Rack" 05/15/06 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Very Impressive!"

I visited The Rack quite awhile ago when it first opened and there just wasn't a lot of merchandise to choose from inside the cramped quarters. It was a friendly and positive place but it just wasn't a store I would drive out of my way for.

Well, all of that has changed and in dramatic fashion! They are still in Commercial Center but have moved to a much, much larger location a couple of hundred yards to the North (if you ever went to the old Star Costumes, they took over that space).

They now have tons of fetish gear for both men and women (more for men but they are working on their ladies line) including pants, tops, shoes, and all the gadgets and collars and bracelets and even masks a fetishist could ask for.

The Rack has two large rooms where they can create made-to-fit outfits and accessories right on the premises and they are in the process of building a 100 seat theatre not only for avant-garde movies but also to view live stage productions. They have plans for invite-only screenings and productions that will be a first for this town.

If you are into fetish gear, The Rack is a must-visit store. I was impressed--you just might be, too!

"Politically Incorrect Laughs"

To begin with, this show isn't for everyone. And I'm not necessarily referring to the fact that the production stars 4 men dressed up as women (i.e. The Kinsey Sicks), either.

But that's where I'll start with this review. Yes, 4 guys don drag but two of them are so muscular that you can see that aspect of it is a bit farcical. The trannie part seems like just a device to deliver clever, insightful and even cutting social and political commentary, somewhat like a Monty Python skit except these guy can really sing--they have wonderful voices whether they are mimicking some musical star or telling their own story.

No, the part that might offend has less to do with the outfits and more to do with their social commentary. Coming from quite a bit left of center they bash Bush and Cheney and Halliburton and, of course, the religious right, among others.

There's a snappy song about gay marriage, or the lack thereof, called (Locked out of) "The Chapel of Love" and an anti-war number called "We Arm The World (We Arm The Children) which spoofs every one of the singers of We Are The World fame all the while delivering a happy yet hard-hitting message.

They also bash Las Vegas' beloved Celine (beloved? yeah, right!) in a wonderful spoof on her Titanic theme song (This Song Will Go On becomes Why Does Celine Go On and on and on) but that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with hilarious cattiness that only men in drag could get away with.

There are a few lulls in this gem but overall it is quite fun and with song titles such as I've Been Through Parasites (But I've Never Had VD) and Rent a Homo the lulls don't last too long.

The theatre is pretty small and certainly intimate (it's easy to get drinks!) and I'm not sure how long this open-ended production will last but if you are looking for something delightfully different you oughta check it out--it's anything but a drag...

"Fun Atmosphere"

We've been here several times and always have a good time. It's not a large place but it's almost always packed with fun people at all hours of the day or night (or early morning).

The food isn't expensive but those little tapas do add up when you keep ordering the tasty morsels. The bacon-wrapped stuffed date tapas are kick-ass (despite my initial trepidation) and so are the little burgers that are even smaller than a White Castle burger.

It's a great place for an informal group to get together and socialize. We usually just order pitchers of Sangria and tell them to keep bringing us refills until further notice.

The bar fills up with people in their 20's and 30's and later in the evening, the lobby is cleared out and a DJ spins funky grooves causing many of the Sangria-fueled patrons to shake it.

The parking lot seems to always be full after hours so if you are headed home after a night of partying, you might stop here for some munchies.

"Artisan" 03/22/06 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"A Head Shaker (in a good way)"

The 2nd lowest lowlife (the Mrs.) and I stayed over night here to see how the rooms compared with the hip and happenin' Artisan lounge we frequent.

We were not disappointed. Just like the rest of the hotel, there's artwork all over the room. We stayed in the Marc Chagall suite so our stay was quite surreal (Ha! That's an artsy joke!!).

The room was not quite a suite (a mini-suite, perhaps) but had the largest walk-in closet we've ever seen in a hotel. It also had a mini-bar/frig that actually had room to put our own party supplies. There's complimentary wine-tasting every evening in the lobby and also complimentary wi-fi throughout the hotel, the rooms and the pool.

While it was too cold to hang by the pool we can't wait until it warms up a bit as there are cool cabanas and a series of what look to be beds (not chaise lounges) that line the water's edge.

The food in the restaurant was quite good, also (she had the chicken picata and I had the steak Diane) and around 8 a jazzy trio started up in the lounge (which we could hear from our dinner table).

All in all, quite an experience. It won't appeal to those coming for the Las Vegas experience, of course, but it's worth trying after getting burned out on too much Sin City as you won't feel like you are in Las Vegas. Ya just kind of shake your head as you walk through the place sayin' "this can't be Las Vegas..."

"N9NE Steakhouse" 12/27/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 4 Price - 3

"Good but Loud"

Sleek and trendy interior with a sexy clientele and good steaks. We like this place but it's pretty loud so it gets a small mark against it. Very small. Especially when considering the hot hostesses and waitresses...

"Hugo's Cellar" 12/27/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 3

"Good but Slipping"

This place used to be one of the top romantic restaurants in town and certainly the class of downtown. Unfortunately, it's been slipping of late with subpar service and a decline in meal quality. It's sad 'cause we've spent many of Valentine's here but probably not any more.

"Top of the World" 12/27/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 3

"A Tourist Must-See"

While the food isn't as good as the price would normally dictate and it's a long walk through a winding mall to get there, we've taken visitors here (especially relatives) on several occasions.
The reason: The amazing view. The Stratosphere is the tallest building West of the Mississippi and the restaurant rotates 360 degrees in 70 minutes making the view of the entire Las Vegas valley 2nd to none.

"Z' Tejas" 12/27/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Good Margaritas"

THIS PLACE IS CLOSED. I WILL MISS THE TORTILLA SOUP.
This building has a long history. In the late 70's, early 80's it was THE disco club (The Brewery), then it became a dingy but kind of fun punk club then it switched to restaurants. From the new exterior it looks like it will remain a restaurant.

"Larry's Villa" 12/27/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 1 Price - 2

"Yikes!"

On a bachelor party quite awhile ago we stopped the party bus and went here. It's pretty much a dive but a long-time and well-known dive it is. We got the groom on stage in a chair and paid a pair of not-so-attractive ladies to rub all over him. And they did him up good. What they lack in looks in this place they make up for in enthusiasm. And they don't break the bank.

"Club Paradise" 12/27/05 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"Couple Friendly?"

This used to be a couple-friendly place but we've had more complaints about this place than any other in the past year. The issues range from being totally ignored, to being given 2nd-class treatment by the bouncers to the girls wanting to be paid for just sitting down and talking. Looks like a "buyer beware" label for this place.

We found this place to be full of blondes in long dresses and very friendly to couples. Most of the ladies would give very nice dances to a female and even put on a show for the surrounding men.
They also have guest performers now and then who generally put on a pretty good stage show.

"zzz-Erocktica Live! (closed)" 09/27/05 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Better Than Expected"

If you like older rock and roll performed by some pretty talented musicians along with some very attractive and topless dancers then this might be a good show for you. One of the ladies is also a damn fine singer, besides having her, um, other damn fine, attributes.

"Krave" 09/27/05 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 4 Price - 3

"Saturday Night Fever"

So far, Krave hasn't been able to get the other nights of the week hopping but Saturday night is excellent. I'd give it a higher rating if they could beef up Friday night. It's a mostly gay crowd, a decent amount of lesbians (especially on GirlBar L.A,. nights--Saturday) and a healthy percentage of alternative M/F couples. Krave feels much more like a big city gay dance club than any of the other gay clubs in town and since it's the only gay club on the Strip there's a nice mixture of tourists and, locals.

"Buffalo" 09/27/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 1

"Good Place To Meet"

Buffalo is often a meeting place for those wanting a drink or two before heading over to one of the nearby dance clubs. It's also a place to go to simply hook up with others since the atmosphere is casual and not so loud that you can't converse. And the, dumpy interior doesn't deter the often attractive crowds of gay males who converge on this place, especially on weekends. It's a good mixture of preppie, biker and bears.
Note: It IS almost totally male (with an occasional trannie) but females always, seem to be accepted.

"zzz-Fashionistas (closed)" 09/22/05 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 4 Price - 2

"Best Kept Secret!"
Due to the nature of our business, we're often asked "what's the sexiest show in Las Vegas?". That was always a really difficult question to answer. If you like female nudity there are several revues that package a few dance steps or some showgirl costumes around several sets of shapely breasts. And there's a show or two that showcases the feminine rear end and even lines 'em up on local billboards to whet your appetite. If beefcake is more to your liking, Las Vegas offers it by the pound. We've got USDA Prime, imports from Australia and Russia and shows that feature a muscle buffet serving a variety of sizes, looks, attitudes, colors and nationalities. There's even a sexy circus in town that tries to shock the easily shockable with lightweight sexual situations.

But the sexiest show for our money has got to be Fashionistas, now showing at the Empire Ballroom six nights a week. The dancers, both male and female, are very hot, very athletic and can actually dance. While the plot itself is hard to nail down unless you've seen the famous porn movie by the same name, it is easy to figure out it's sexy, it's edgy and it hits (hint, hint) on themes not touched by any other show in town. We think it's worth a look.

"Flex" 02/02/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 1

"Strike 3?"

They keep tryin' to make a go of it as more than a poorly attended local's and it just doesn't reach critical mass. They've had male lap dancers (pretty good ones, too) and a decent DJ and still not much action, especially on the dance floor.

"Mandalay Bay Events Center" 02/02/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 4 Price - 3

"Great Place for Larger Concert"

As the title suggests, we like this place for concerts. It's got pretty damn good sound for a variety of music types and pretty good seats all around. It's also a quick in and out to get alcoholic drinks! Yeah!!

"Las Vegas Lounge" 02/02/05 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Transexuals Abound"

If you are into the transgendered (boys who have become or almost have become girls), this is probably a good bar for you to check out. It's kind of a dive but some of those "girls" don't look bad and could possibly fool you. Bring some, dollars and tip the dancers.

This place used to have the worst sound system in Las Vegas now it's just one of the worst.

"Mamma Mia" 02/02/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"ABBA is Fun"

An interesting working of ABBA songs into a musical. Some clever weavings of the lyrics into the script of the play. It actually works! It's definitely a happy happy, joy joy kind of thing but it's one of those kind of goofy things that become cool.

And it's amazing how many ABBA fans are out there, partly because ABBA was very hard to hide from and seemed to be everywhere for awhile 20 years ago.

Anyway, it's a fun and feel-good production and you'll probably enjoy it if you let yourself. Was told it's not as good as the London production but not too far off.

"Luxor" 02/02/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 3

"Not Bad."

The pyramid thing is kind of neat, especially the elevators that move at an angle ("inclinators"), they have some pretty good bargains on suites and it's next door to the Mandalay (connected by a walkway) so that's all good but overall it's a, pretty unexciting place to hang.
There IS a bar to the far right past the check-in counter that's good for meeting hook-ups (forgot the name just now).

"Tournament of Kings" 02/02/05 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Kids Love It!"

If you have younger kids, this is a great dinner show to take them to. They get to eat a medieval dinner with their fingers and root for an easy-to-follow knights-in-armor melodrama. Parents won't get quite the thrill although there is a bit of beefcake, to keep mom happy.

"zzz-Splash" 02/02/05 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Vegas-y"

For some reason, I've seen this show more times than I've wanted to. Not sure why I get sucked into going but it happens. If you want to see a typical Vegas-y show, this would be a good one. Has some singing, some dancing, some humor, some breasts and, a couple of semi-wow performances--mermaids in a fishbowl of water and also some motorcyclists whirling around in a globe.
Edit: Hear this show has closed so call first.

"Amazing Johnathan" 02/02/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 1 Price - 2

"Bad Attitude..."

...but that's good. It's good to see there's still a market for slightly demented, definitely cynical humor and we're glad to see Jonathan carry the torch. If you're off-beat you'll probably like this.

"Zumanity" 02/02/05 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"Atypical Cirque"

Midgets, BBW's, beefcakes, implied lez action, sorta S&M, almost sexual situations--this isn't your fathers' Cirque du Soliel. For Vegas (and Cirque) it's risky but pervs like me leave wishing for just a little more risk-taking. But then again, it, ain't bad for a major production.

"Lance Burton" 02/02/05 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"A Nice Guy"

If you are going to see a magic act in Las Vegas this is probably the best one to see. Lance seems like an extremely nice guy in a nerdy sort of way and has a lot of fun on stage. We weren't totally wowed by the feats but maybe we are getting cynical in our old age...

"Danny Gans" 02/01/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 4

"A Nice Show"

OK, Danny seems like a nice guy and he is fairly talented with his impressions but 100 bucks seems fairly steep for the return. As he's moved up in quality of venue (and ticket price) I just haven't seen much of an improvement in his show. Yeah, it was, under-priced at the Stratosphere but about right when it was at the Rio.
It's a fun show so I don't want to totally discourage you from going but I don't think it's that good. Lot's of God-blessing America if you like that sort of stuff.

"Blue Man Group--Bluetopia" 02/01/05 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 3

"I'm In The Minority, I Guess"

To me, the BMG is just OK. It's different, I'll give it that, but it's kind of like a one trick pony, a constant variation on a theme. Maybe that's just me.

However, if you have kids they will absolutely love it because the cool factor for children is off the charts. There's a good amount of audience interaction including some your kids will talk about in school for days. Plus, the Blue Men pose for pictures and autographs afterwards, spreading cool blue ink when signing.

In case you were wondering, the show hasn't changed much at all since it's early days.

"Charlie's (formerly Backstreet)" 01/31/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 1

"Boy oh Boy, Gay Cowboys!"

Not a whole lot happens at this place on most nights except lez night Thurdsay night and the extremely popular Sunday evening (6ish) beer bust and then the place is packed.
Real live square dancing and two-steppin'. Often better dancers than Gilly's,.
The DJ has a rough time trying to play regular dance songs so doesn't very often.
If you are gay/bi and looking for a good way to end the weekend head over here on Sunday for a laid back country social.

"Planet Hollywood Theatre for the Performing Arts" 01/31/05 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"Great Acoustics"

This is perhaps THE best sounding concert venue of any size in all of Las Vegas. We've seen some great shows here over the years from rock to R&B to pop. Unfortunately, the size of the place makes it a tweener, smaller than the large venues (Thomas, & Mack, Mandalay) but larger than the intimate clubs (The Joint, House of Blues) so it takes specially-priced talent to perform here and it seems that the Aladdin doesn't win the bidding for all that many concerts.

"Peppermill's Fireside Lounge" 01/31/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 2

"Meet 'n' Greet"

Hooking up with a new couple or single? This is a good place to meet them, especially if they are locals since it's so easy in, easy out and right on the Strip. Cozy, secluded, fairly dark--there have probably been more hook ups over the years in this, place than any other Las Vegas hang out.

While the front is a glorified Denny's (good for late night munchies), park behind and enter through the back door and you'll be in a place built for illicit rendevouz complete with a water-bubbling fireplace.

"zzz-Gilley's (closed)" 01/31/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 2

"Bikinis and Mud and 2-Steppin'"

This place brings a lot of tourists to watch the bikini bull riding and the mud wrestling but you'll also see a lot of locals out on the dance floor when the band or DJ kicks it into gear. Something doesn't seem quite authentic but the place does get hopping.

"Forty Deuce" 01/16/05 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 4

"Major Disappointment"

I was expecting quit a bit more from this place. The burlesque wasn't burlesque at all, just two attractive gals with nice, shaking butts running around on stage doing their impression of Miss Fitness America while flinging off some of their clothes (no, nudity) now and then. No teasing, no audience interaction, just a loud tenor sax, stand up bass and a drummer pumping out speeded-up versions of the traditional sassy songs you might expect and the girls doing a frenetic dance routine to them.

The, place is quite small, perhaps seating 50-60 total in two sections--the "commoners" portion up near the bar/dancer runway and the VIP buy-an-expensive-bottle section. The first show, scheduled at 11:30 got started at 11:45 and may have lasted 30 minutes total, which included both dancers and the band's filler in between. The next show was scheduled for 1:00 a.m. and since the house music was so loud it effectively limited conversation and with no dance area for patrons to boogie, most people, decided to head out.

"Coyote Ugly" 01/06/05 Attitude - 1 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 3

"Coyote UGLY is Right."

Having been to the New York City club of the same name I had high hopes for the Vegas version. Boy, was I let down. The NYC bar is delightfully dingy, packed with men and women who were laughing and drinking and having genuine conversation and staffed with sassy female bartenders who would occasionally get on stage and incite the crowd through humor, free drinks, good-hearted humiliation and even sing an occasional popular song now and then (both of the pop and bawdy variety).

The Vegas version was anything but fun. Yes, I knew the seedy interior would have to be manufactured so that was the least of my disappointments. While the NYC "Ugly" bartending ladies may not have been the hottest looking gals in the world (they were attractive, but not nearly up to the Hollywood version), they had a fun and playful personality that added to the overall ambience of the bar, a bar that could have stood on it's own even without the outspoken employees.

The Las Vegas version seems to have, forgotten the real selling point of the original. Instead, it's a bunch of guys drinking beers and waiting for the next woman to get on stage and verbally abuse them. The ladies didn't bartend, sing or do much else except heap on the insults, all the while surrounded by two burly security guards on each side of them.

It all seemed pretty negative to me...

"Sand Dollar Blues Lounge" 12/29/04 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 1 Price - 2

"Down and Dirty"

Probably the only place in town that has live blues every night of the week and certainly the only place that feels like the blues. This place is all about blues, bikers and beer. It isn't for the squeamish but if you really like the blues then you probably aren't anyway. It's got a dance floor that gets hopping during most every song so leave your attitude back at the hotel room and let da blues take over your soul!

Edit: It closed and has reopened and it isn't nearly as vibrant as before. Sort of like a guy who has had open heart surgery isn't quite the same as before the operation. We'll see how this plays out.

Update: This place is back to it's old self and usually has good bands and a mostly-packed house. It's still a dump but that's part of the charm--who wants a sanitized place to listen to kick-ass blues?

"Bahama Breeze" 12/29/04 Attitude - 4 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 2

"Casual Dining"

Not a bad place to meet some new prospects ya met online. Not too far from the Strip but just far enough to feel like it. The food is decent, the drinks are good and the help, while not the top-of-the-line lookers that work on the Strip, are very, efficient and often quite fun.
The outdoor dance floor appeared to be inhabited by conventioneer folk but they were having big fun so more power to 'em.

"Tabu" 12/29/04 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 4 Price - 3

"Ultra Ultra Lounge"

This is what I had in mind when I first heard the coined phrase "ultra lounge". Places to sit all around but with excellent dance music at just the right level to allow for both conversation and dancing (which often takes place on the coffee, tables!).
Very easy for couples to converse, dance a bit and get in the mood for the next phase...

"Double Down Saloon" 12/29/04 Attitude - 2 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 1

"Punk Lives!"

A good place to get down and dirty while watching punkers thrash around on stage. One of the few remaining venues in town for this type of live music. Interestingly situated between UNLV and the gay district, this place attracts mostly college kids,. Lots of energy and a fight once in awhile.

"Voodoo Lounge (VIP Tix!)" 12/29/04 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 3

"Downhill From Here"

I've never liked having a band without a dance floor but I suppose with the Vegasy bands they bring in it's all for the best. Can't see actually wanting to meet here but do understand if you had dinner at the restaurant on the floor below where you might, want to have another drink or two to close the deal.
Despite it's drawbacks it has a killer balcony bar 40 floors up and the place is often crowded (with a slightly older bunch--many 45+). We practically had sex with some new friends right near the, bar so it's tough to dis this place totally.

Edit: I gotta admit I haven't been back since they opened the new stuff so maybe this review sucks. I'll let you know when I go back.

"Good Starting Point"

Let's just say you are meeting someone for the first time and you want to get to know them prior to a possible dinner or maybe dancing or maybe heading to the room or maybe sayin' "c-ya!". Start here. It's fairly quiet, romantic and secluded,. You can get to know them before you move on. It's not necessarily a place to meet new people but a great place to find out what the current possibility is like, especially if either of you are staying at the MGM.

"Studio 54" 12/28/04 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"Still Pretty Good"

Well, it was never anything like the legendary Studio 54 in NYC (c'mon, a dress code?!) but then again, it's inside the MGM so how risque could it really get?

Granted it has seen better days and with all the new clubs that have opened in the past few years it could be expected but it still draws some good crowds from the host and surrounding hotels and even quite a few locals. It isn't the trendiest but it's a safe bet for a good time, especially when toting around acquaintances with varying tastes.

As Diva sez, great view of the Strip from the balcony 40+ stories up. Also fun to test your confidence in man-made devices by jumping up and down on the plexiglass pane which sits imbeded in the balcony floor 400 feet up from the ground.

All of that, aside, the ghostbar is regularly a gathering of some very attractive, very trendy hipsters who are serviced by some very hot bartenders. Not a bad place to people watch or to meet new friends.

~sigh~ FreeZone used to be Vegas' only real lesbian bar (the owner is lesbian) but that has changed in the past year or so. While there are still some lesbians around (usually a butch bunch in the back by the pool tables), the club has targeted the, younger (most in low to mid 20's) hip hop crowd.
The DJ used to play a mixture of all sorts of music but now it's almost entirely hip hop with a nightly obligatory Latin break.

The staff is some of the friendliest, the drinks are some of the cheapest, and there are still some dark corners for misbehavin' so we still check it out now and then.

"What a View!"

The Foundation Room can be good or dead, fun or not depending on a lot of factors. It can be packed after a concert downstairs at the House of Blues (owned by the same group) as the entertainers, friends and supporters can make it a happening place. Other nights it can be fairly dead. Then again, since Mandalay started giving out free passes to hotel guests and the club started allowing non-members admittance (most but not all the time) it can still be a crowded place even without the help of the H.O.B. crowd.
No matter what, if you do make it up there check out the view from the balcony. Many of the breathtaking photos of the Strip come from this vantage point.

"Down somewhat lately..."

Gipsy, the long-time king of Las Vegas gay dance clubs, seems to be hurting a bit of late with much sparser crowds even during prime nights. It's possible Krave (and perhaps Hamburger Mary's and FreeZone) is stealing some of their luster but Gipsy has survived challenges for supremacy in the past so we'll see how this plays out.

Gipsy used to get so crowded that you couldn't move partly because they played some of the best dance music of any club in town, partly because they continue to upgrade the facilities and partly because of their proximity to other gay clubs and bars in the "fruit loop" (L.V.'s gay district, as small as it is). It's definitely worth a look, especially after midnight.

"ZZ-The Beach" 12/28/04 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 2 Price - 1

"Still kickin..."

We keep thinking this place will die and it just doesn't. Perhaps it's because of it's proximity to the L.V. Convention Center that keeps it alive. The beer gals and the shot boys and girls are still pretty hot but the crowd has really gone downhill, over the past few years and the music is pretty much the same as it ever was, same as it ever was. And it has become almost a nightly tradition to have several drunken, polyester-expanding gals dancing on the exhibition stage. Well, at least they are, having fun doing it. That sort of festive mood probably has something to do with the multitude of bachelorette parties and the whip cream humiliation the shirtless hunks can dish out to the brides-to-be on the bar in front of everyone. The Beach is, kind of like El Squid Roe (in Cabo San Lucas) except not quite as fun nor wild. If you go with a large crowd and want to dress casually, this place might still have a good time or two left in it.

Edit: Went again a short while back and it has officially died. All the good looking bartenders and beer girls are gone and the ones that are there look p.o.ed or something. R.I.P. man, you had a decent run...

"Drai's" 12/28/04 Attitude - 3 Eye Candy - 3 Price - 3

"The granddaddy of L.V.'s after-hours spots"

If you find yourself with an early-morning buzz and the club you are at is going downhill, you might venture over to Drai's to keep the buzz alive (or pump it back up!). My biggest complaint is getting to the club in the first place as you have to wind your way through a brightly lit, low-class casino (by Strip standards) to get there. The culture clash with you in your party clothes and your party frame-of-mind working your way past the corn-fed lookie-loos playing blackjack as you desperately try to get to the elevator that will take you to the sanctuary on the bottom floor. Suck it up, be strong and don't lose the mood because once you are there a sigh of relief and ultimately pleasure will overtake...
