"Politically Incorrect Laughs"
To begin with, this show isn't for everyone. And I'm not necessarily referring to the fact that the production stars 4 men dressed up as women (i.e. The Kinsey Sicks), either.
But that's where I'll start with this review. Yes, 4 guys don drag but two of them are so muscular that you can see that aspect of it is a bit farcical. The trannie part seems like just a device to deliver clever, insightful and even cutting social and political commentary, somewhat like a Monty Python skit except these guy can really sing--they have wonderful voices whether they are mimicking some musical star or telling their own story.
No, the part that might offend has less to do with the outfits and more to do with their social commentary. Coming from quite a bit left of center they bash Bush and Cheney and Halliburton and, of course, the religious right, among others.
There's a snappy song about gay marriage, or the lack thereof, called (Locked out of) "The Chapel of Love" and an anti-war number called "We Arm The World (We Arm The Children) which spoofs every one of the singers of We Are The World fame all the while delivering a happy yet hard-hitting message.
They also bash Las Vegas' beloved Celine (beloved? yeah, right!) in a wonderful spoof on her Titanic theme song (This Song Will Go On becomes Why Does Celine Go On and on and on) but that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with hilarious cattiness that only men in drag could get away with.
There are a few lulls in this gem but overall it is quite fun and with song titles such as I've Been Through Parasites (But I've Never Had VD) and Rent a Homo the lulls don't last too long.
The theatre is pretty small and certainly intimate (it's easy to get drinks!) and I'm not sure how long this open-ended production will last but if you are looking for something delightfully different you oughta check it out--it's anything but a drag...
